Chapter 7

Camp Atterbury

The day of my departure from New York’s Kennedy Airport to Indianapolis, Indiana, was cold and dark. The sky was gray and filled with clouds, and looked as if it was going to rain. I had to report to the Mount Vernon Job Corps Office to be sworn in. I had mixed emotions, I was nervous and excited at the same time.

Mr. Vanderporten swore me in along with a few other guys. I felt as though I was entering the military. After being sworn in, it was time to head to the airport; our next destination would be Indiana. My excitement was at its apex; the last time I had been in an airplane I was on my way to visit my father in Los Angeles but I was too young to remember the experience.

This time I would remember my flight. To say I was nervous would be an understatement; inside I was all jumbled up but of course I played it cool calm and collected on the outside. I was not alone in the nervous department; there were other guys in my position. Guys like Chino, a Puerto Rican from the Bronx.

Chino lived on the Bronx-Mount Vernon borderline. And because we lived in close proximity of each other and was sworn in together we became friends right away. We called each other homeboys and no matter what we were going to stick together.

After boarding the plane I strapped myself into my seat and closed my eyes. My eyes remained closed before and after the plane took flight. Between taking peeks out the window I couldn’t help but notice the line of guys waiting to use the Rest Room. Were they ill? Why did they all have to go at the same time? I found out later why the Rest Room was so popular.

There were guys on the plane traveling to Camp Atterbury from all over the five boroughs of New York City; the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. There were people from as far as Long Island and a few stragglers from upper Westchester County.

So what was going on in the Rest Room? The boys were going in to do drugs. My suspicions were confirmed when Chino offered me some drugs, and not to be left out I took him up on his offer.

When I got back to my seat I was flying higher than the plane. And shortly after returning to my seat I became ill. My stomach ached so bad I went to sleep deciding that rest would be my best medicine.

I woke up just in time to see our plane land in Indianapolis, Indiana. Once we landed and collected our luggage it was time to board the bus to Camp Atterbury. Camp Atterbury was approximately 40 miles from the airport. The bus ride seemed longer than 40 miles. It probably had something to do with the fact we were riding in one of those raggedy old yellow school buses with no shocks

We arrived at Camp Atterbury in the dark of the night.
